About Us
Galena City School District is one of the most unique school districts in Alaska, serving a diverse population of students with an uncommon array of schools that's just as diverse.
At GCSD, there's a place for everyone.
Our Mission
The mission of Galena City School District is to provide an engaging, inspirational, and impactful learning environment for every student, in every content area, every day, through recruiting and retaining exceptional staff, actively partnering with our learning community, and serving the whole child.
Our Schools

Sidney C. Huntington School
The Galena community school is called the Sidney C. Huntington School (SHS). The Sidney C. Huntington School provides quality K-8 education for the Galena students.
Sidney C. Huntington high school shares campuses with the Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA). This arrangement doubles the courses, facilities, instructors, and activities available to local students and GILA students.
Galena Interior Learning Academy
Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA) is a statewide residential school for grades 9 through 12 and is Alaska’s longest-operating residential secondary vocational school.
GILA has become an example of success with students from all over the state who have left home in search of better educational opportunities. The unique combination of academics and vocational offerings supported by highly qualified teachers and staff gives students a significant advantage.

IDEA Homeschool
The IDEA Homeschool program (Interior Distance Education of Alaska) is the longest-running homeschool program in the state, serving the needs of homeschool students and families throughout Alaska since 1997.
We are privileged to partner with homeschooling parents, providing resources and support to committed parents who choose to provide a personalized education for their children.
iGrad Alaska
One size does not fit all in education, so iGrad's online high school program provides an alternative path to graduation.
There are many reasons why a traditional classroom setting might not work for some high schoolers. Health concerns? Family obligations? Work obligations? Credit-recovery needs? The list goes on. iGrad is designed from the ground up to meet the individual needs of the student.

Mr. Huntington's Legacy
On May 10, 2015, the Galena community honored and celebrated Sidney C. Huntington’s 100th birthday. His transformational contributions to the city, state, and region as well as to both the Galena Interior Learning Academy and Sidney C. Huntington Schools were recognized, appreciated, and admired through a traditional potlatch.
Stories of his life and his tremendous impact on education were an inspiration felt by all and we will be forever grateful for his steady hand, immense character, and wise stewardship.
Mr. Huntington’s favorite quotes reads “Make life worth living: work hard, keep up a good spirit, and have a good attitude towards others. This will take you a long way in life.” Each day, we strive to personify these traits and ensure they remain pillars of our educational philosophy within Galena City Schools.
